Founder's Message

John Osha
Founder, Comp-U-Dopt

Comp-U-Dopt was founded on the belief that every child deserves equal access to education and opportunity. This is not just a moral mandate. The long-term health and welfare of our society depend on the education, skills and resources we provide to today's children.

Early access to computers and computer literacy are essential components of modern elementary education. More than simply a tool for homework assignments, regular computer access enables children to naturally explore, investigate, and develop critical-thinking skills essential for continuing education and eventual employment. Despite the prevalence of computers in our nation, far too many children do not have adequate access to educational technology.

The genesis of Comp-U-Dopt came from our recognition that a typical computer in a business setting today has a life cycle of only three years or less. The majority of these computers -- millions of units -- are warehoused or scrapped rather than being put to good use. A working computer that is too old to be useful in a business setting may nonetheless be a dream come true for a enthusiastic young learner whose family cannot buy a new computer.

Comp-U-Dopt collects lightly used computers, services them, and installs educational software designed to encourage and challenge the children we serve. Environmental stewardship is central to our mission as well. Every computer that is donated to a child is one less computer in a landfill.  Thus, two positive results can be obtained through a single donation of a computer.

With your donations of computers and financial support, we strive to:

  • Ensure that the Houston-area children we help have access to a computer at home.
  • Enable corporate and private donors to provide another generation of use for computers.
  • Partner with community organizations that share our commitment to local children.
  • Help high school and college students to improve their technological skills.
  • Offer students, adults and retirees meaningful community service opportunities.

Thanks to the technical, logistical and financial support of our donors and volunteers, an excellent Board of Directors, and our executive director, Comp-U-Dopt has helped foster the educational aspirations of thousands of Houston-area children. But our work has just begun. We invite you to donate computers, financial support or volunteer your time. Come see for yourself how your donation can make an immediate difference in a Houston child's life.

Thank you for your interest in and support of Comp-U-Dopt.

Sincerely,

John (Hunter) Osha
