By 2030, the world is expected to generate 82 million tons of e-waste, according to the UN's Global E-waste Monitor . That’s enough to bury Manhattan knee-deep in waste that releases toxic substances like lead, mercury and cadmium, negatively impacting everything from our food production and water supply to the air we breathe.

How ITAD+ Works

Compudopt’s ITAD+ process is secure, seamless and zero-hassle, making it easy to turn e-waste into community empowerment:

1. White-Glove Pickup or Secure Shipping

Compudopt coordinates a secure pickup from your location or arranges secure shipping to one of our facilities. That’s one more errand you can cross off your list!

2. Certified Data Destruction

All data-bearing devices are wiped in accordance with the NIST 800-88 PURGE standard , supporting compliance with regulations such as HIPAA and GDPR. Partners receive a Certificate of Erasure for their records.

3. Reconditioning and Responsible Recycling

Reusable devices are cleaned, refurbished, and loaded with Ubuntu Linux or Windows 10 based on community needs. Devices that can’t be reused are recycled through certified R2 or e-Stewards partners, following the highest sustainability standard (R2v3).

4. Community Computer Distribution

Refurbished computers are distributed for free to individuals and families across the U.S. who do not own a device, opening the door to education, employment, connection and more. In addition to receiving the device, community members receive 24/7 tech support , and wrap-around technology training resources . Compudopt even offers low-cost internet options for those without a reliable connection.

5. Impact Reporting

Partners receive a tax receipt and a custom impact summary highlighting environmental and community outcomes. You’ve made more than just a donation – you’ve made a difference.

In 2025 alone, Compudopt recycled 234,119 pounds of e-waste and distributed more than 40,000 devices powered by this process. That’s over 200,000 pounds of electronics helping our communities stay connected – and not damaging our planet.

“[Sustainability] oftentimes is overlooked because the spotlight shown on the digital divide doesn’t talk about the fact that [reconditioning these devices] is helping keep things out of the landfill,” said Chief Operating Officer Allison Katarski in an interview with Recycling Today . “But core to who we are is [the question]: What are we doing on a day-to-day basis to ensure that we are good stewards of the resources that we raise and also of the planet?"

Compudopt Partners with City of Goodyear to Empower 140+ Arizona Families with Laptops

At the first-ever GoodyearConnects Resource Fair in October 2025, digital opportunity nonprofit Compudopt gave away 144 computers to families in need.

In October of 2025, the City of Goodyear’s inaugural GoodyearConnects resource fair connected residents with essential support services and highlighted nonprofit partners and organizations serving the community. Among them, Compudopt, the national nonprofit on a mission to empower communities with free computers, affordable internet, and tech education.

Dozens of community organizations, including Arizona@Work, Hope Assembly, AZ Community Impact, and WIC Arizona, gathered in the Goodyear Recreation Center to share their services with residents.

In our increasingly online world, technology access is no longer a luxury. Lack of computers is a critical part of the digital divide, the tech access gap that keeps millions of Americans disconnected from online opportunities.

“Together, we're helping bridge the digital divide by providing laptops to Goodyear families in need of a working computer,” said Jeremy Dyck, Neighborhood Services Manager for the City of Goodyear, Arizona.

Leading up to the event, Goodyear shared information about the resource fair and opportunity to receive a free computer. Interested residents were asked to sign up to be selected at random for a laptop. The only eligibility requirement? Not having a working computer of their own at home.

In all, 144 Arizona families took home a computer with which to work, learn, attend telehealth appointments, and more.

A Decade of Service: Compudopt CEO Announces Transition Plan

Following a decade of record-breaking impact, Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly is stepping away from the leadership role.

HOUSTON (Mar. 13, 2026) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education at no cost to under-resourced youth and their communities, is searching for its next executive leader following the announcement that CEO Megan Steckly is stepping away from the role later this summer.

Steckly will continue serving as CEO through July 2026 while Compudopt’s Board of Directors partners with the national search firm Lantern Partners to evaluate internal and external candidates. The search committee is expecting to name the organization’s next leader by June 2026.

As the organization’s chief executive officer, Compudopt’s CEO is responsible for ensuring long-term sustainability by leading strategic vision and planning, overseeing a 200+ person team, securing and stewarding meaningful national partnerships, expanding the organization’s reach and impact, and representing Compudopt in national and regional forums.

“Megan’s decade of service has set an incredibly high standard for Compudopt’s next leader,” said Genesis Draper, Presiding Judge of Harris County Criminal Court at Law No. 12 and Chair of Compudopt’s Executive Search Committee. “We’re looking for a leader with the experience and expertise to guide a national organization, but also the heart for the mission. Megan is passing the torch, and we’re committed to identifying someone who will lead with the same amount of passion for connecting communities to opportunity.”

Steckly joined Compudopt in 2015 and led the organization through a period of unprecedented growth and national expansion. Under her leadership, Compudopt:

Expanded its reach to more than one million people across 80+ cities nationwide
Advanced a strategic, systems-level approach to removing barriers to connectivity
Secured and deepened multi-million-dollar national partnerships

E-Waste Programming and More

The national nonprofit concluded a record-breaking year by distributing 41,970 free computers, connecting 10,277 homes to free or low-cost internet and equipping 4,500 individuals with digital education

HOUSTON (Feb. 5, 2026) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education at no cost to under-resourced youth and their communities, celebrated major mission milestones in 2025, bringing the total number of individuals impacted by digital solutions since the organization’s founding to one million.

Compudopt concluded a record-breaking year by distributing over 41,970 free computers , connecting over 10,277 houses to free or low-cost broadband internet and providing educational programming to over 4,500 students nationwide. It was also a growth year for Compudopt’s ITAD+ program, which provides organizations with a secure, sustainable, and community-centric device disposal process. In 2025, Compudopt processed over 37,759 devices and recycled 224,1119 pounds of e-waste.

Compudopt’s mission and impact show up in the daily lives of those it serves. In 2025, 79% of adults who received a computer reported using their device daily for work and/or education , and 84% of children used their computer for schoolwork . Compudopt’s technology education and training also equipped community members, with 91% of participants saying they gained tech confidence and 81% expressing more interest in STEM careers .

“Throughout 2025, I was constantly reminded of our mission’s core truth: technology access opens the door to life-changing opportunities,” said Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly. “When we connect underserved families, we bring them one step closer to economic mobility and independence, and that ripple effect shows up throughout the entire community.”

In 2025, Compudopt concluded its multi-year, $35 million partnership with Santander US , which resulted in groundbreaking milestones, including raising an additional $70 million in funding, the expansion of Compudopt’s services to more than 60 cities and impacting over half a million individuals with digital solutions. Other national collaborations from the year include increased activities with AT&T, Recycle Global Exchange and Mission Telecom .

Beyond unlocking education and employment opportunities, in 2025, Compudopt’s mission connected communities to each other when it mattered most. In Texas, Compudopt distributed free computers to households impacted by the summer floods in Kerr County. In Mesa, AZ, a social impact entrepreneur and domestic violence survivor, Rafael Testai, used the free computer he received from Compudopt to create StatuteFINDER, a free and anonymous app providing state-specific legal rights for those experiencing domestic violence. The national nonprofit celebrated the landmark milestone and 18 years of providing computer access, internet connectivity and digital education to youth and their communities at its inaugural Power Up event, raising $300K to continue its mission of digital opportunity for all.

Houston (Nov. 10, 2025) - Digital opportunity nonprofit Compudopt is celebrating a landmark milestone: impacting one million individuals across the U.S. with free digital resources.

To commemorate the historic moment, Compudopt hosted its inaugural Power Up: Impact of a Million event on Nov. 6 in Houston, bringing together donors, corporate partners, community leaders, and those impacted by the organization’s services to celebrate its nationwide impact. Houston Mayor John Whitmire proclaimed Nov. 6 as COMPUDOPT DAY , and the organization received official proclamations from the offices of US Senator John Cornyn , US Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia , Texas State Senator Carol Alvarado , Texas State Representative Christina Morales , and Harris County Judge Linda Hidalgo . The event raised $300K to help empower the next one million people with digital opportunities.

“Compudopt’s founding purpose of providing technology access and education to under-resourced communities has led to extraordinary impact,” said Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly. “When I joined the organization ten years ago, impacting one million people was a dream we wrote on a whiteboard. Today, it’s the reality we’re celebrating alongside our incredible partners, staff and volunteers.”

Founded in Houston in 2007 with the belief that every student deserves access to technology, Compudopt began bridging the digital divide – an issue affecting 41% of Americans living below the poverty line – by refurbishing and redistributing used computers at no cost to 700 families annually. Today, Compudopt serves an average of 30,000+ families per year through on-site operations in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Mesa, and San Antonio, as well as satellite services in 75+ cities, including rural communities with limited access to digital resources.

The organization has also expanded its services to become the only national nonprofit providing holistic, no-cost digital solutions addressing the four barriers to connectivity: device access, affordable internet, digital education and workforce-aligned skills. Through its Theory of Change, Compudopt has impacted individuals of all ages, like Carlos in Mesa, AZ , who is pursuing a computer science degree with his free computer, and April in Dallas, TX , a 34-year-old mom and non-traditional college student working toward her online degree in social work to create more opportunities for her family.

Santander’s $35M gift empowered Compudopt to raise an additional $70M in funding and expand access to in-home technology, high-speed internet and education programming across 60 cities

Houston (Nov. 19, 2025) – Digital opportunity nonprofit Compudopt and Santander US have impacted more than half a million people with digital solutions through a multi-year partnership and $35M grant that provided no-cost, high-speed internet connectivity, computers, training and support to low-income communities.

The initiative launched in 2022 with a $7M investment from Santander aimed at providing greater financial empowerment and overall well-being to North Texas communities lacking digital access. Since then, with the help of Santander’s support, Compudopt raised an additional $70M in funding and expanded its services to 60 more cities , including Atlanta, Mesa, and San Antonio, where the organization now operates full-time, in addition to its locations in Houston, Dallas, and Chicago.

“The digital divide is a national challenge that requires an all-hands solution,” said Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly. “Santander fully championed Compudopt’s vision by providing comprehensive support to bring it to life. Our partnership has demonstrated that incredible, tangible impact is on the other side of true collaboration.”

Together, Santander US and Compudopt have supported more than 412,000 individuals with digital literacy and technology education, distributed over 62,000 no-cost devices, and connected more than 51,000 households to reliable internet. By addressing the digital divide through these holistic solutions, the communities served saw an 18% increase in average household income .

Based in Arizona, Juan Carlos Reyes Paz (Carlos) is one of the thousands of students impacted by Compudopt and Santander’s partnership. After discovering his passion for computer programming in high school, Carlos had his heart set on pursuing a career in computer science, but didn’t think it would be possible because he didn’t own a computer. Since receiving a free device from Compudopt, Carlos is earning his degree and is even employed part-time with Compudopt to give back to his community.

“Our partnership with Compudopt was built on the belief that equipping low-income and underserved communities with digital access, resources and training will open the door to economic opportunity,” said Christopher Pfirrman, Chief Legal Officer, Santander US Auto Business. “Our support underscores Santander’s global focus on three key community pillars – Education, Entrepreneurship, and Employability – and today, more than half a million people like Carlos don’t just own a computer, they’ve unlocked possibility. National Digital Inclusion Week 2025

Each year, Compudopt joins our partners in celebrating National Digital Inclusion Week (October 6–10, 2025), a national observance dedicated to raising awareness about digital opportunities and the vital importance of access to our digital world.

Digital access is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Yet, it’s estimated that up to 14 million U.S. households still lack reliable digital access. While many rely on phones and tablets for connectivity, these devices simply aren’t sufficient in a world where robust digital engagement is essential for working, learning, and connecting. When community members can’t apply for jobs, students can’t access homework, or households can’t access online healthcare or banking, entire communities are left behind.

Compudopt’s Impact

We believe in holistic solutions. Across the country, we address the four key barriers to digital opportunity: computer access, affordable high-speed internet, digital literacy, and workforce-relevant skills. To date, we’ve:

Distributed over 160 , 000 computers for free

While 97% of our community members surveyed said owning a computer made their lives easier or better, the real impact is in the stories of those we serve: Carlos, a first-generation college student in Mesa, is pursuing a degree in computer science. Nahum, a middle-schooler in Chicago, learned to code. Jordy, an Atlanta freshman, no longer worries about losing access to a computer at the end of the semester. April, a Dallas mother of two, is earning her online degree to create new opportunities for her family.

As North Texas Giving Day approaches, culminating on September 18, 2025, with giving opening on August 28 , Compudopt is proud to be among the registered nonprofits joining this inspiring community-wide philanthropic movement.

What’s North Texas Giving Day All About?

Organized by the Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT), North Texas Giving Day is the largest one-day giving event in the nation. In 2024, the event raised over $70 million, supporting more than 3,200 local nonprofits across 20 counties. 100% of every donation goes directly to participating organizations, as CFT and its sponsors cover transaction and technology fees.

Compudopt’s Mission and Impact

Since its founding in 2007, Compudopt has been dedicated to closing the digital divide by providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and communities.

Our programs include:

Refurbishing and distributing like-new computers
Offering high-speed, low-cost internet solutions
Delivering digital literacy training and tech education
Direct service to households at no cost to participants

In North Texas alone, Compudopt has already distributed more than 25,978 computers to Dallas-area residents, provided technology access and support to 28,056 individuals , and enrolled over 3,013 under-resourced households in our high-speed internet service.

Computer Access Positively Impacts Families, Nonprofit Report Finds

The national survey, conducted by the digital opportunity nonprofit Compudopt, found that family computers are predominantly used for employment, learning and training, communication and entertainment.

Houston (Aug. 12, 2025) – Access to digital devices, such as laptops, desktop computers and tablets, positively impacts youth and their families, according to the Device Satisfaction and Usage Report published by the national digital opportunity nonprofit Compudopt .

As part of its holistic approach to closing America’s digital divide, Compudopt distributes refurbished devices at no cost to individuals and families who do not own a reliable computer. To better understand the current digital connectivity landscape, how community members use their digital devices and ways it can improve its services, Compudopt surveyed 10,000+ computer recipients and found:

Most (92%) respondents did not have a working household computer prior to receiving Compudopt’s services, relying instead on phones or tablets to complete online tasks.

Almost all (97% ) respondents reported their new device made their lives easier or better.

Adults (18 and older) mostly use their devices for employment (41%), learning and training (32%), communication (20%), and entertainment (24%).

“Many of us take our computers for granted, while 41% of the U.S. population lacks digital access and are relying on phones or tablets to apply for jobs, receive healthcare, and so much more,” said Compudopt’s Senior Manager of Data Analytics, TJ Hanes. “These findings prove that owning a reliable computer positively impacts the entire family.”

In addition to device usage among adults, the report examined the impact devices have on school-aged children, finding that a majority of students used their devices for schoolwork (91%), learning and training (38%) and entertainment (45%).

Device access is particularly important for students during the summer, as the break has been shown to increase learning loss and social isolation for students without an online connection at home. According to the National Summer Learning Association , summer learning loss grows most dramatically between lower and higher-income students over the summer months.

“The summer months bring unique challenges for families without connectivity,” said Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly. “This report reinforces how important Compudopt’s services are to helping students enrich their learning outside of the academic school year. By providing students and their families with the tools to connect, we are not only supporting their education, but providing a form of connection and entertainment that is so critical to a healthy human experience.”

AT&T, Recycle Global Exchange, and Compudopt Team Up to Make Electronic Recycling Easier and More Impactful

Houston (May 8, 2025) - AT&T, Recycle Global Exchange (RGX), and Compudopt have joined forces to expand an in-store e-waste collection program that offers the public a simple and impactful way to safely recycle their old personal technology while helping to bridge the digital divide.

Building on a successful pilot in 2024, the expanded program will launch across more than 100 AT&T retail locations in Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Beginning May 1, consumers can drop off used phones, tablets, and laptops at participating stores with bins for responsible device refurbishment, recycling, or reuse. For every 10 pounds of e-waste collected, AT&T and their nonprofit collaborator, Compudopt, will donate 1 laptop to individuals in need – up to 2,000 laptops. Through this initiative, we’re keeping e-waste out of landfills and empowering individuals and families to thrive in a digital world.

RGX, a Colorado-based cleantech company, is powering the program’s logistical infrastructure through its technology platform. The RGX system connects enterprise clients like AT&T to a national network of service providers while streamlining workflows, automating job tracking, and reducing management time and expense. By simplifying what can often be a complex process, RGX enables companies to achieve sustainability goals, reduce their carbon footprint, and maximize the value of their retired IT assets.

Collected devices are handled by Compudopt, a national nonprofit dedicated to closing the digital divide. Devices will be assessed, and laptops that qualify will be refurbished and distributed to students, individuals, and families who lack access to technology. Non-qualifying devices will be safely recycled to avoid landfills.

Compudopt to Bring Free Xfinity Internet Service to Thousands of Families in Several U.S. Cities

The no-cost Internet program launched in Houston with 200 families also receiving free laptop computers

HOUSTON (Feb. 24, 2025) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing free technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities, is set to give free high-speed Xfinity Internet service to thousands of families in Houston, Atlanta and Chicago thanks to a new partnership with global media and technology company Comcast . Compudopt is able to provide the free Xfinity internet service through Comcast’s Internet Essentials Partnership Program (IEPP) .

Compudopt and Comcast are committed to shrinking the digital divide, which impacts nearly 11% of U.S. households lacking access to a high-speed internet connection, according to 2023 U.S. Census Data.

“While digital access and connectivity are increasingly important resources, challenging economic times force families to choose between internet services and household necessities,” said Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly. “Our partnership with Comcast offers families affordable, accessible solutions, especially to the thousands of households impacted by the end of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).”

IEPP was launched by Comcast in 2020 as part of its Internet Essentials initiative, designed to accelerate student internet adoption through partnerships with school districts and adjacent organizations. Comcast has established IEPPs with hundreds of schools, school districts and other organizations across the country.

“Every family deserves to be connected to education, healthcare, online banking, community and more,” Comcast Texas’ Regional Senior Vice President Jose Espinel said. “We know digital accessibility opens the door to more opportunities, and we’re inspired by the impact this partnership with Compudopt will make on thousands of American households.”

To celebrate the partnership, Compudopt and Comcast hosted an event at the Tejano Center for Community Concerns, where the organizations distributed 200 free laptops and connected 200 local families to Comcast’s Xfinity internet service at no cost. Local elected officials were also in attendance.

The national nonprofit concluded a record-breaking year by distributing over 17,700 free computers, connecting 6,500 homes to free or low-cost internet and equipping 2,500 individuals with digital education

HOUSTON (Feb. 17, 2025) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education at no cost to under-resourced youth and their communities, celebrated mission milestones in Q4, impacting over 65,000 individuals across the country with digital equity solutions.

Compudopt concluded a record-breaking year in Q4 by distributing over 17,700 free computers, connecting over 6,500 houses to free or low-cost broadband internet, provided educational programming to over 2,500 individuals nationwide and expanded its digital equity services to Northwest Tennessee.

In addition to providing device and connectivity access, Compudopt exposed hundreds of middle school girls to virtual reality, coding and other digital skillsets through its annual Women in Tech event across Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Mesa, AZ. Students learned how to use their free devices for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) and received mentorship from leading women in STEAM fields.

“Compudopt’s work this past quarter is a true testament to our mission of making technology more accessible,” said Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly. “From connecting young girls with engaging digital programming to close the gender gap in STEAM fields, to providing life-changing resources to Northwest Tennessee, Compudopt is leveraging connectivity to create more fulfilling futures.”

Compudopt also launched two national partnerships in Q4 that will propel its mission forward. Over the next three years, Compudopt and nonprofit telecommunications organization, Mission Telecom , will provide 30,000 free devices and a year of free high-speed internet to families nationwide. Compudopt also partnered with major electronics retailer, Micro Center , to make donating electronic devices easier for businesses and individuals, diverting used devices from landfills and into the hands of the community.

“The digital divide is a massive challenge, but an incredibly solvable one,” said Steckly. “We’re powered by the organizations that raise their hand to be part of the solution, enabling us to put more devices into more homes, connect families to critical internet services and equip tomorrow’s leaders with comprehensive digital education.”

As Compudopt expands its partnerships and service reach, the organization welcomed Rita Stall as Chief Experience Officer to oversee Compudopt’s site operations and national programs, ensuring impactful experiences for staff and program participants. The organization also welcomed Gabriel Spears as Senior Director of Community Impact for San Antonio, where the organization officially launched services in May 2024.

The nonprofit partnership has already equipped 5,148 families across five states with critical digital resources

HOUSTON (Dec. 16, 2024) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education at no cost to under-resourced youth and their communities, and Mission Telecom , a nonprofit telecommunications organization, have entered a three-year partnership to bridge the digital divide by providing 30K families nationwide with free digital devices and at least one year of free high-speed internet.

Compudopt and Mission Telecom began collaborating in Nov. 2024 and have since distributed over 5,148 devices to under-resourced communities across the country. The two organizations officially kicked off the three-year partnership at a device distribution event in Houston earlier this month, where 102 local families received a free device and high-speed internet. “At a time when technology impacts nearly every aspect of society, device access and connectivity are the first steps toward closing the gap,” said Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly. “By equipping a family with basic connectivity resources, we’re opening the door to economic mobility and social opportunity that changes lives. US Census data reports that as of 2021, up to 21% of American households lack an in-home computer, which creates roadblocks and challenges to navigating today’s digital landscape, from pursuing education to managing a bank account to sourcing health care, meaningful employment and more. Through the partnership, communities will experience the benefits of connectivity, as well as access to Compudopt’s multi-language IT support and a two-year device warranty to ensure they’re supported through their new digital journey.

HOUSTON (Oct. 25, 2024) – Compudopt, a national nonprofit providing technology access and education at no cost to under-resourced youth and their communities, celebrated a summer of service in Q3, impacting more than 65K individuals.

The nonprofit advanced digital equity by distributing more than 15K no-cost devices to individuals who do not own a computer and by providing critical connectivity services to hundreds impacted by natural disasters. Compudopt also expanded its partner support and received more than $1M from organizations including Shipt, Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation, Old National Bank, Zayo and the Moody Foundation, to continue bridging the digital divide.

Following Houston’s widespread power outages caused by tropical storm Beryl in July, Compudopt provided no-cost charging stations, internet connectivity and device access to hundreds of individuals. Compudopt continues to provide resources to communities in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton.

“Compudopt views digital equity from a multitude of lenses, including disaster relief,” said Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly. “A family’s ability to communicate with their loved ones and receive updates on the status of their home, school and work is dependent on their connectivity abilities. We’re proud to lend a helping hand and play a small part in the recovery efforts across the country.”

North of Houston, Compudopt deepened its impact in North Texas through strategic partnerships and community collaboration. Compudopt partnered with network provider Zayo to distribute 300 free laptops to Dallas County residents, as well as Catholic Charities of Fort Worth to conduct the organization’s first Digital Skills Cohort. The cohort was comprised of 23 refugee students representing various countries and five languages, who learned basic computer skills to enhance their future education. To support its investment in the Dallas Fort Worth region, Compudopt named Chris Quintanilla as Senior Director of Community Impact.

Along with regional efforts, Compudopt partnered with telecommunications powerhouse AT&T on a nationwide connected learning initiative, where the two organizations distributed free laptops with online resources, as well as backpacks to 13K students across Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington D.C. ahead of the 2024-2025 school year.

Compudopt is thrilled to participate in this year’s Digital Inclusion Week (DIW) . From October 7-11, we will be hosting a series of impactful in-person events, classes, and workshops designed to equip students and communities with the technology and skills they need to thrive.

DIW is a nationwide event encouraging digital inclusion through various events aimed at educating and reaching out to the community, making it an excellent opportunity to extend the mission of Compudopt to empower youth and their families.

Why Digital Inclusion Week Matters and How It Aligns with the Compudopt Mission

Digital Inclusion Week has the pivotal objective of bringing awareness into the discussion of the barriers that millions of people face in their pursuit of digital access, particularly among low-income and underserved communities. At Compudopt, we aim to bridge this digital divide by providing device, internet access, and digital literacy education. We believe that digital equity is a basic right, and technology with the skills to thrive in today's connected environment must be afforded to everyone.

Compudopt, AT&T Equip 13,000 Students With Free Back-To-School Resources

This summer, Compudopt and AT&T will distribute free laptops, backpacks and online resources to thousands of students across the country

HOUSTON (Aug. 1, 2024) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities, has partnered with AT&T through AT&T’s Connected Learning Initiative to provide free laptops, backpacks with supplies and online resources to 13K students across Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington D.C.

US Census data reports that as of 2021, up to 21% of American households lack an in-home computer, which creates roadblocks and challenges to navigating today’s educational landscape, from registering for classes to completing homework and connecting with teachers and peers.

“Technology plays a critical role in students’ success today,” said Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt. “We have to equip the next generation with the tools, training and resources they need to become tomorrow’s business leaders, engineers, teachers, scientists, nurses and more. That starts with technology access and education, and Compudopt is proud to partner with a powerhouse like AT&T to support thousands of students ahead of the 2024-2025 school year.”

Recipients who were pre-selected prior to the distribution events will receive a refurbished computer that comes pre-loaded with educational resources, including AT&T’s free digital learning platform, The Achievery _SM , access to Compudopt’s multi-language IT support and a two-year warranty to ensure students have the resources to thrive in the upcoming school year and beyond.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Compudopt on this tremendous back-to-school initiative to get laptops into the hands of thousands of students across the country,” said Mylayna Albright, Assistant Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at AT&T. “Thanks to the incredible efforts of Compudopt, we will see lives changed through the numerous opportunities these laptops will provide students through the school year and beyond.”

National Nonprofit Compudopt Celebrates 17 Years of Digital Equity Solutions with 610k Individuals Impacted

In H1 2024, the Houston-based organization received more than $15M in corporate funding, expanded its service area and grew its executive leadership team to continue bridging the digital divide

HOUSTON (July 30, 2024) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities, today announced first-half performance results to solidify a successful start to 2024, including the expansion into new service areas, secured funding to expand existing offerings and a strategic addition to the executive leadership team. To date, Compudopt has impacted 610K individuals with digital equity solutions.

In H1, Compudopt partnered with national organizations committed to bridging the digital divide, securing more than $15.2M in funding for national and local programming. This funding included 11.6K individual Gift-in-Kind donations of electronic devices and major donations from corporate partners including The Santander Consumer USA Inc. Foundation, Houston Methodist and others, including a $250K donation from The Alliant Credit Union Foundation. This funding will enable Compudopt to round out its suite of comprehensive digital solutions in Chicago by offering free and low-cost internet to the community.

Compudopt’s corporate and community partnerships also contributed to the organization’s service area expansion. In April, Compudopt launched its services in San Antonio, Texas and the surrounding Bexar County. Through the nonprofit’s partnership with Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Compudopt will provide 5,000 free computers to eligible families, connect 2,500 households to free or low-cost internet, offer digital literacy training to 18,000 individuals and equip 300 students with workforce-aligned tech education opportunities and more within the next two years.

In addition to reaching a key milestone of 610,000 individuals impacted, 52,186 of which were in H1, the nonprofit also celebrated 17 years of service and surpassed local milestones, including 1,000 free devices distributed in Dallas and 2,500 free devices distributed in Chicago.

“Every day, Compudopt bridges the digital equity gap through holistic solutions that make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve,” said Megan Steckly, Compudopt CEO. “To look back on the first half of the year and see the incredible progress we’ve made in such a short amount of time is a testament to our hardworking team, collaborative partners and collective belief that a more equitable future is possible. The second half of 2024 is brimming with opportunity and I’m inspired by all that’s possible.”

To support the organization’s continued growth and pursue additional government funding, Compudopt recently welcomed Marie Arcos to the executive leadership team as the nonprofit’s Chief Government Affairs Officer. Arcos’ 20 years of experience in the nonprofit space and time spent on Compudopt’s board of directors will enable her to collaborate with local and national government bodies to further Compudopt’s mission of bridging the digital divide through impactful legislation.

Looking ahead, Compudopt is currently working alongside corporate partners to prepare students for the 2024-2025 school year. The nonprofit recently launched its Connected Learning Campaign with corporate partner AT&T, which will provide free computers and backpacks to 13,000 students across Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington D.C. through Sept. 2024.

CDC Foundation's Donation Provides Free Computers to Atlanta Students via Compudopt

The CDC Foundation’s donation to the nonprofit will impact almost 2K Atlanta residents

ATLANTA (July 17, 2024) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities, is providing under-resourced Atlanta students with free computers.

In May, the CDC Foundation donated more than 1,600 gently used computers to Compudopt to be refurbished and distributed at no cost to Atlanta residents.

“The digital divide is an incredibly solvable problem, but we have to start at the source: device accessibility,” said Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt. “Most organizations phase out gently used computers every three years, and many of those devices end up unused in landfills or spare rooms. We’re grateful to the CDC Foundation for choosing to partner with Compudopt so that we can refurbish their retired devices and change the lives of nearly 2,000 Atlanta students.”

Prior to expanding its services to Atlanta in 2021, Compudopt estimated that more than 500,000 individuals in the metro area were without an in-home computer and high-speed internet access. To date, the nonprofit has provided almost 8,000 no-cost computers and 10,000 tech-enabled training and resources to local students and their families.

“Today’s students need access to technology. Providing computers to students will empower our youth to learn, to create and to innovate,” said Monique Patrick, Chief Operating Officer of the CDC Foundation. “We were pleased to utilize these computers during the COVID-19 response work we did with CDC to support state, tribal, local and territorial public health departments across the nation, and that these computers will now be donated for use by students who in turn will help to strengthen our nation's future.”

Compudopt will distribute the computers donated by the CDC Foundation by year-end.

The national nonprofit, with support from Methodist Healthcare Ministries and other community partners, will equip the San Antonio region with digital equity solutions.

SAN ANTONIO (April 26, 2024) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities, is expanding its mission of closing the digital divide to Bexar County.

The nonprofit’s entrance into San Antonio is made possible in part by Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc., as well as partnerships with Santander Consumer USA Inc. Foundation, the City of San Antonio, San Antonio ISD and San Antonio Digital Connects.

As the start of a long-term commitment to Bexar County, over the next two years, Compudopt and its community partners will:

Provide 5,000 free computers to eligible families (along with two years of tech support and warranties)
Connect 2,500 Bexar County households to free or low-cost internet
Offer digital literacy training to 18,000 individuals
Equip 300 students with workforce-aligned tech education opportunities
Launch a localized community portal, as well as technology and digital navigation support, in up to 26 languages with live interpreters

"According to the latest census data, more than 33,000 Bexar County households lack an in-home computer and 83,000 households do not have broadband internet. Technology access impacts nearly every aspect of modern life, including education, social connection, healthcare and economic mobility,” said Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt. “By working with strong and established community partners to deliver our complete digital inclusion solution, we are creating a happier, healthier, sustainable and more connected Bexar County.”

Compudopt and its partners launched its San Antonio service with a community event and computer distribution on April 25 at Frost Bank Center, where the organization gifted 300 local families with free computers, connected households to internet solutions and presented in-home access to Compudopt’s curated, online support center, which caters to various needs such as housing, childcare, education, healthcare and food access.

“Compudopt has demonstrated the incredible benefits of digital equity across the country and we could not be more excited to see that positive impact here in Bexar County,” said Jaime Wesolowski, President and CEO of Methodist Healthcare Ministries. “Access to telehealth and other healthcare resources will directly change the trajectory of our community.”

National nonprofit organization Compudopt, headquartered in the Heights, has marked a significant milestone, receiving more than $7.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2023 to bolster its goal of providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and communities nationwide. The funding and initiatives undertaken have directly impacted over 33,000 individuals across the United States.

Compudopt's mission is to engage in the recycling of donated computers, refurbishing them and installing advanced technology software. The organization then allocates these computers to families in need through its Computer Giveaway program. Compudopt's commitment extends beyond the provision of computers, as the organization also actively assists families in identifying affordable or no-cost internet solutions. In addition, the organization takes an extra step by offering free tech education to both youth and adults. This initiative is designed to spark curiosity and interest in learning, with the ultimate goal of paving the way for brighter futures.

Lisa Wortham, a Digital Skills recipient, expressed gratitude for the knowledge and skills she acquired in the digital skills class. Compudopt is also gifting her a computer.

"I am excited about receiving my new computer. Having access to a computer will open up opportunities for me to pursue my GED with confidence, and I am grateful for this chance to make my children proud of me," she said.

The numbers speak volumes. To date, 7,595 computers have been distributed, 1,480 Houston households connected, and a direct impact on 8,261 community members has been achieved, with an additional indirect impact on 26,848 community members just in Houston. Compudopt's services are primarily driven by its 754 volunteers, who together have spent a total of 2,514 volunteer hours serving Houston residents.

“I really enjoy working with Compudopt, and the programs I get to teach, said Compudopt Houston Trainer, Ian Krayer. "The instances when the students are truly engaged with the learning process were evident in the small moments. I recall a group of girls who enthusiastically responded to my questions by simply reading the information from the board. Their laughter and enjoyment were palpable throughout the entire interaction.”

Compudopt's success is fueled by strategic partnerships with notable organizations such as AT&T Inc., DuPage Foundation, HP Inc., The Meadows Foundation, North Shore Gas Company, Peoples Gas, PwC, The Santander Consumer USA Inc. Foundation, and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. These collaborations resulted in tangible outcomes for Compudopt's education programs and operations.

"We're thrilled to share that 2023 was one of our organization's most successful years to date, impacting over 110,000 individuals," said Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt. What’s the news? Three hundred refurbished laptops will be given to Atlanta students and families as part of AT&T’s nationwide commitment to help bridge the digital divide. The laptops, funded by an AT&T donation to Compudopt, will be given to Atlanta residents in need. AT&T is working with Compudopt to provide individuals and families with laptops and digital literacy resources to help them fully participate in our digital world.

Why is this important?

These efforts are part of the AT&T Connected Learning initiative , created as part of our company-wide commitment to help address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption.

Compudopt Celebrates Strong Q3 with Market Expansions, Connection Milestones and New Corporate Partnerships

The Houston-based nonprofit expanded to five new cities last quarter to help bridge the digital divide across the country.

HOUSTON (Oct. 16, 2023) – Compudopt, a national nonprofit providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities, today announced key third-quarter performance results including new market expansions, strategic leadership additions and the achievement of multiple connectivity milestones.

In the nonprofit’s recently published Summer of Impact report , Compudopt shared it has impacted 262,000 community members to date through free and low-cost digital solutions. This major milestone includes the distribution of 78,790 computers to students and families without an in-home computer, offering 82,947 students digital literacy courses and connecting 4,400 households to free or low-cost connectivity.

“As we prepare for the end of the year, it’s incredible to look back and celebrate the impact we’ve made in the lives of students and families in the past few months alone,” said Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt. “Every day, we move one step closer to closing the digital divide and it’s not without the tremendous support of our community and corporate partners, dedicated team and passionate volunteers.”

Throughout the third quarter, Compudopt expanded to five new states, Ohio, Kentucky, Florida, California and Washington DC, and served more than 6,600 students across the country. The nonprofit also made significant progress with local community and corporate partners as it celebrated 5,000 community members connected in Dallas and was named a partner in the City of Chicago’s Digital Equity Coalition’s computer donation drive.

In addition to expanding its work with existing partners, including EY, AT&T and alliantgroup, Compudopt welcomed new corporate partners, EOG Resources and Onsemi, to advance the national mission. Through the partnership with EOG Resources, Compudopt will be able to expand its services to New Mexico, Wyoming and North Dakota in 2024.

As Compudopt continues to prioritize growth, the nonprofit has recruited top talent to support its national and regional teams and communities. In September, Compudopt named Candice Schaefer as the organization’s chief development officer. With more than a decade of experience in development at top nonprofit organizations, including Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Heart Association, Schaefer will spearhead Compudopt’s corporate and community partnerships. Compudopt also welcomed Donna Beedle as the senior director of community impact for the Mesa, AZ, office, and Vonda Malbrough as the senior director of community impact for the Atlanta, GA, office.

With the support of new leadership and corporate partners, Compudopt plans to further expand its impact to at least one new market before year-end and continue equipping its service areas with digital resources, tools and training to bridge the digital divide.

ATLANTA:

Operational Milestones:

We launched Compudopt Connected in another apartment complex, wiring 458 units at The Commons in Atlanta. We now have 4,907 total active and connected families in Atlanta, but we’re not stopping there! Our work with Althea continues to grow, and we’re assessing three potential properties for future builds. Our dedication to fostering tech access is evident in our ongoing distribution plans. We’ve distributed 2,359 computers this year and have partners lined up until the Fall of 2024.

Empowering Education:

Fall 2023 is set to witness a remarkable feat with 16 confirmed programs that will contribute substantially to achieving our tech education objectives for the year. The forthcoming semester promises a vibrant learning journey for our youth!

Community Engagement Beyond Borders:

The Atlanta Compudopt team received an esteemed invitation to participate in the Ebenezer Back to School Block Party. This historic event, hosted by the renowned Ebenezer Baptist Church, holds deep ties to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his father's powerful messages.

CHICAGO:

Empowering Digital Access:

In July, the City of Chicago’s Digital Equity Coalition launched a computer donation drive. Compudopt was thrilled to be named a beneficiary, with several individuals pledging their support and promising leads emerging from several new companies.
We concluded the summer in Chicago with over 10 computer distribution events, during which we handed out more than 800 devices.

Elevating Educational Initiatives:

Progress marches steadfastly as we propel towards our program goals for the upcoming Fall semester. Our partnerships with enthusiastic hosts stand ready, awaiting the signal to launch engaging programs.
We hosted 10 programs this summer in Chicago, impacting over 190 students.
Currently on track to exceed all program goals by the end of our Fall semester.

Milestones in Development:

We welcomed the support of several returning and new donors.

DALLAS:

On August 9th and 10th we celebrated with our partners and community members our milestone of serving 5,000 Dallas residents with free connectivity support services! Here’s a recap in case we missed you!

From games and ice cream to 66 families receiving computers, we loved getting to welcome community members to this celebration which took place at the West Dallas Multipurpose Center.

Representatives from Senator Cornyn’s office attended, and we received a letter of appreciation from Congressman Marc Veasey which was read aloud during the program. We heard the compelling story from a family who has received our service and recognized the 1,000th household to get internet! Another key part of this celebration was to recognize and thank Santander Consumer USA Foundation. Their initial $7M investment to support our work in Dallas is what has made it possible for us to do this work. In fact, thanks to their gift, across all our programs we’ve impacted more than 50,000 community members.

On the 10th we had a few more fireworks to celebrate at a noon zoom for our friends and partners who couldn’t attend in person the day before. The presentation highlighted impressive figures – positive shifts in households impacted, expanded computer access, and enriched educational opportunities for students. Don Smith, Santander's Chief Technology Officer, underscored the ongoing importance of digital inclusion. We also heard from Marycruz De Leon from the Dallas Federal Reserve also joined the gathering, shedding light on broader community efforts and sharing a link to a Digital Inclusion Research Forum that will be hosted on October 12th and 13th.

Computers Distributed:

As summer came to a close, we successfully distributed more than 1,700 computers, enabling us to surpass our annual goal of distributing 5,700 devices.

Engaging the Community:

Our commitment to community engagement shines through as we participated in noteworthy events like the Family Resource and Back to School Expo at DeKaney High School. These events enable us to connect with potential partners and expand our outreach.

Vibrant Volunteer Engagement:

We fostered a culture of volunteerism by hosting engaging events that brought together partners like the Society of Hispanic Engineers, TC Energy, and the Houston Advisory Board. A total of 48 dedicated volunteers generously contributed 204 hours in July alone.

Successful Summer Programs:

Summer 2023 marked a successful period as we completed a total of 21 programs, catering to the educational needs of 273 students.

Exciting Fall 2023 Plans:

Anticipating an exciting fall season, we are already in discussions with 21 potential sites. Our ambition is to serve 27 diverse cohorts, ranging from Tiny Techs to Digital Skills programs.

Tech Lab’s Remarkable Endeavors:

Our Tech Lab team has been hard at work, refurbishing over 600 donated devices with the invaluable assistance of volunteers. A remarkable 550 machines were expertly refurbished in the month of July alone.

Triumphant Back-to-School Bash:

The Back-to-School Bash held on August 5 th was a resounding success. Partnering with HP, Compudopt proudly distributed 600 laptops and backpacks filled with essential school supplies to the local community, making a meaningful impact.

MESA:

Leadership Transition:

This summer, we welcomed Donna Beedle as the new Mesa site director. Her swift acclimation to her role is promising and she’s quickly getting up to speed.

Enhancing Program Management:

To strengthen our presence and relationships in Mesa, we’ve brought in a dedicated program director. Additionally, the recruitment process is ongoing for an Ops position, and we’re actively sourcing potential candidates for community engagement.

Expansion Plans:

Upon securing the additional staff members, we’re gearing up to engage in Digital Life Clinic events. These events will significantly contribute to increasing our ACP (Affordable Connectivity Program) outreach figures and further expand our computer registration list.

Physical Location Consideration:

We’re in the process of identifying a suitable physical location within Mesa. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing our flexibility and granting easier access to our equipment, ultimately streamlining our operations.

NATIONAL:

National Impact:

A remarkable feat this summer is our significant impact on over 9,450+ individuals nationwide.

Educational Programs:

Throughout the summer, we successfully conducted 23 educational programs, creating a positive influence on the lives of 178 students.

Diverse Regional Reach:

Our commitment extends across various regions as we brought our Tech education programs to Galveston, St. Louis, Seattle, Dayton, and Evansville this summer.

Widespread Computer Distribution:

Our efforts in computer distribution have been substantial this summer, with 717+ computers reaching individuals across the nation.

The milestone connection was made as part of a $7 million investment to close the digital divide in Dallas

DALLAS (Aug. 10, 2023) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities, in partnership with Santander Consumer USA Inc. Foundation, recently celebrated connecting five thousand Dallas community members to free internet.

The milestone moment is part of a national, $35 million initiative driven by the Santander Consumer Foundation and Compudopt to close the digital divide across the U.S. by providing connectivity, devices and digital training to communities in need. The initiative was launched in Dallas in Jan. 2022 with a multi-year, $7 million investment targeted at student households below 200% of the federal poverty level in the city’s southern sector to deliver:

Free high-speed internet for up to 10,000 student households
Free warrantied computers for 7,500 student households, including multi-lingual help desk support
Free education and training to boost student and caregiver digital skills offered to 24,300 residents
Free after school workforce-aligned technology enrichment education for 300 youth

“Compudopt sees a future where every family is equipped with the infrastructure, resources and development to thrive in today’s digital age,” said Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt. “We’re grateful to have a partner like Santander Consumer that is equally invested in solving today’s challenges for a more connected tomorrow, and we’re so proud to celebrate this milestone moment together in the city of Dallas.”

To mark the achievement, Compudopt hosted a community event where local leaders, elected officials and families enjoyed festivities and were connected to additional resources. As part of the event, Compudopt distributed 66 free computers, equipped with educational programming and digital training resources. Closing Chicago's Device Gap

MAYOR BRANDON JOHNSON LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO CLOSE CHICAGO’S DEVICE GAP

CHICAGO — July 17, 2023

Mayor Brandon Johnson, in partnership with World Business Chicago, announced the launch of a month-long campaign encouraging Chicago’s business community and large organizations to donate computers and laptops no longer in use to be refurbished and given to families who need a device.

According to Census data, as many as 260,000 Chicago households don’t have a computer at home . Through the Chicago Digital Equity Council, 61% of participants discussed affordability as a barrier to digital equity, with 29% saying that devices are too costly. In a citywide survey of more than 3,000 residents, nearly half of respondents without a device are living in extreme poverty.

To close this 260,000-device gap, the City is partnering with two non-profits, PCs for People and Compudopt, who accept retired computers and laptops, data-wipe and refurbish them, and provide them to households for free or a low cost.

“The digital divide disproportionately impacts South and West Side communities and has a severe impact on our youth and students. This is why I am committed to ensuring that every student has a laptop, tablet or computer at home,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson . “I am proud to launch Chi Device Donation Month, which will help put these devices into the hands of students and their families, and remove a long-standing barrier to achievement, employment, and helping Chicagoans thrive well into the 21st century.”

Organizations interested in donating their retired computers can fill out a pledge form and will be contacted by PCs for People or Compudopt to schedule a pickup. The City, through the Chicago Digital Equity Coalition , will also promote opportunities for households to obtain the refurbished devices through community distribution events, giveaways, and more. This campaign implements a recommendation in the Digital Equity Plan , Chicago’s citywide plan to close the digital divide.

The national technology nonprofit, with support from community leaders, will provide computers, low-cost internet solutions and digital skill building resources to thousands of Mesa residents.

MESA, AZ (May 15, 2023) – Compudopt , a national nonprofit providing technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities, today announced its expansion to Mesa, AZ, where it will work to close the digital divide. The nonprofit’s local presence is made possible in part by a $7M donation from Santander Consumer USA and will be in partnership with the City of Mesa, Mesa Public Schools and Motorola Solutions. The Santander Consumer USA contribution is funded through the Santander Consumer USA Inc. Foundation.

Over the next two years, Compudopt and its community partners will:

Provide 7,500 no-cost computers to eligible families
Offer digital skill building to over 24,000 individuals
Deliver workforce-aligned technology after-school education programs to 300 youth inMesa and surrounding communities
Help connect 10,000 households to free or low-cost internet through private broadband, provided by Motorola Solutions’ Nitro solution.

"As of 2021, more than 25,000 local households did not have an in-home computer. At Compudopt, we believe that access to technology is the foundation for education and economic mobility, so we're thrilled to bring our work to Mesa," said Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt. "Our work with Santander Consumer USA Foundation, the City of Mesa, Mesa Public Schools and Motorola Solutions will offer more community members access to reliable technology, affordable internet and digital literacy."

Currently, more than 14 million households across the U.S. lack access to reliable technology and internet at home, which has both immediate and sustained impact, with the COVID-19 pandemic widening this digital gap. Pew Research Center reports that 59% of lower income parents say their child may face digital obstacles in schoolwork, including having to work from a cellphone, use public Wi-Fi or not complete work due to lack of resources.

Motorola Solutions’ Nitro solution will extend the city’s network into the homes of Mesa residents who do not have reliable internet and provide a strong connection and capacity for students to complete their schoolwork, apply to colleges and for families to conduct telehealth visits, apply to jobs and more.

ATLANTA, GA (MARCH, 20, 2023) – Compudopt, a nonprofit with a mission to provide technology access and education has received $7M dollars to provide free computers, internet connectivity, digital skill training, and technology education programs to thousands of eligible low-income Atlanta residents.

The initiative is part of a larger $35M investment supporting digital equity work across the United States and is aimed at providing greater long term economic mobility for community members who lack access to technology at home. Building on their successful work in 39 other cities across the United States this investment launches Compudopt services in Atlanta.

“We estimate there are over 500,000 individuals in the Atlanta metro area without their own computer and/or high speed internet connection at home. This is a solvable problem, and it is critical that we continue to invest in initiatives that support giving students and families the tools they need to access additional resources,” says Megan Steckly, CEO for Compudopt.

Through the partnership Compudopt will distribute 7,500 computers , help connect 10,000 households to free internet resources , and offer digital skill training for over 24,000 individuals. Households with students at home which are at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible to participate and can register on Compudopt’s website.

The lack of technology access at home extends beyond distance learning and impacts a family’s ability to participate in critical services such as telehealth, workforce skill development, online banking, and reaching additional support services. The organization successfully delivers this comprehensive solution in partnership with local community agencies, school districts, and municipalities. This thereby helps to build trust with community members and ensures quality wrap around support services are also more readily available to those in need.

NEW YORK – Super Bowl LVII will impact the Arizona community with more than 30 charitable activities and outreach events that will enrich the community and provide lasting legacies long after the game is played.

Super Bowl Week activities include community projects made possible by NFL Foundation Super Bowl Legacy Grants and the Super Bowl LVII Host Committee, community greening projects, Salute to Service events to honor our military and veterans, NFL PLAY 60 Kids Day and a series of volunteer projects involving the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award presented by Nationwide nominees.

As part of Inspire Change, the league's social justice initiative, the NFL will work with three local community organizations to address the digital divide and the way it impacts youth. Working with Chicanos Por La Causa, the Greater Phoenix Urban League, and Native American Connections and non-profit Compudopt, the NFL will provide laptops to hundreds of children impacted by unequal access to technology via a grant from the NFL Foundation.

Throughout the week the NFL will honor, empower, and connect with the military community through a number of Salute to Service-centered events. The week will kick off with Military Appreciation Day at Super Bowl Experience presented by Lowe's followed by the USA Wheelchair Football League Championships. With support from an NFL and Bob Woodruff Foundation Salute to Service grant, Move United started a USA Wheelchair Football League for athletes with disabilities, including veterans. During Super Bowl week, a Championship Game will showcase the sport and invite NFL Legends to serve as honorary captains. NFL representatives will also visit Luke Air Force Base as part of its Community Day to meet and interact with service members from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, including the pilots conducting the Super Bowl LVII flyover.

The NFL will support the LGBTQ community throughout the week in Arizona in a number of ways. A Night of Pride with GLAAD, presented by Smirnoff is an evening of music, cocktails, and interview-style conversations with GLAAD, NFL friends, and partners to spotlight advances in and the future of LGBTQ inclusion in professional sports as well as the NFL's commitment to former and current LGBTQ players and LGBTQ league members. The NFL will also welcome youth and their families from one-n-ten, a Phoenix-area nonprofit dedicated to serving and assisting LGBTQ individuals, for a special flag football clinic, featuring members of the Gay Flag Football League, at Super Bowl Experience. These youth will also receive allyship cards written by current and former NFL players to express their support for them as members of the LGBTQ community.

The Super Bowl LVII Business Connect program brings together 200+ companies who participated in the year-long program designed to bring Super Bowl-related contract opportunities, professional development and networking opportunities to local, diverse businesses in the Phoenix area. In partnership with the Business Connect team and the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, the woman, minority, LGBTQ+, and veteran-owned companies in the program worked to participate in both virtual and in-person business development workshops to prepare their businesses to compete for Super Bowl LVII contracts and jobs the game will bring to Arizona.

Business Connect suppliers have secured contracts to work a myriad of jobs over the 10 days of events leading up to Super Bowl LVII including catering, transportation, entertainment, décor, staging, barricades, construction at State Farm Stadium to meet Gameday needs and more.

High school football student-athletes and coaches will be celebrated by the NFL with two separate events at the Super Bowl, highlighting the values and fun associated with the game of football, Play Football High School Day at the Super Bowl Experience presented by Lowe's and the Play Football Family Festival.

The NFL seeks to leave a lasting legacy in the surrounding communities of the Super Bowl host city with the Super Bowl Legacy Grant Program, made possible by an annual $1 million contribution from the NFL Foundation and matched by the Super Bowl Host Committee. This year, the NFL and the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee will support local nonprofits with proven track records of benefiting underserved Arizonans. How this nonprofit is connecting Dallas residents to the village of resources

Nonprofit organization Compudopt saw the $35 million multi-year grant it received from Santander Consumer USA earlier this year as the perfect opportunity to support the growth it had been experiencing for the past three years.

The Houston-based organization was founded in 2007, but until 2019, it had only been providing services in Houston and Galveston.

“Because of the demand during the pandemic, we decided to nationalize, but it really exploded the work that we're doing,” Compudopt CEO Megan Steckly said. “Now we're in 16 states and 26 cities providing programming.

When we became partners with Santander Consumer, there was this opportunity for us to really build an incredibly unique national partnership (and) deliver a complete digital equity solution, and I believe it’s the first public-private partnership of this scale in the country.”

For the last 15 years, Compudopt has provided technology access and education to underserved communities. The organization has distributed more than 50,000 computers to students across the country and delivered about 200,000 hours of technology education so far.

The $35 million grant began with a $7 million investment in Dallas and will support the agency’s expansion into five cities. In Dallas, the nonprofit focused on providing free high-speed

Internet connectivity, computers, training and technical support to households below 200% of the federal poverty level.

This year, Compudopt handed out over 5,000 computers, built its first 20 connectivity sites and connected more than 500 households to free Internet in Dallas. The nonprofit also educated about 10,000 individuals in its digital literacy program and enrolled about 150 students in its technology center and enrichment education program.

Steckly said about 83% of the households served this year are living in poverty, and as the organization expands its work in Dallas, the grant will allow it to distribute 7500 computers,

connect 10,000 Dallas residents to the Internet, educate over 24,000 individuals in its digital literacy program and enroll 300 students in its technology education program.

“Because Santander Consumer really made it possible for us to come into Dallas and do this work at a really meaningful (and) impactful scale, we have other funders and other community agencies that have also said, 'can you do more here?’” Steckly said. “I would be comfortable saying that we've secured another 2 million in collective additional funding because of this gift again to support furthering the work in Dallas itself.”

As Compudopt expanded into Dallas, it first wanted to know what the needs were, Steckly said. The organization connected with nonprofit agencies to gain insight into what residents needed. From there, Compudopt introduced a citywide lottery registration for free computers.

“When people register and say, 'I need a computer,’ they validate their household income, and they let us know what kind of internet connectivity they have and their skill-building needs,” Steckly said. “That gives us a heat map. Down to the individual household level, we can look at the city of Dallas and (identify) hotspot areas that have a greater number of people in need. From there, we launch in a community, and then it spreads across the city."

Steckly describes Compudopt as network agnostic. Besides affordability, inefficient infrastructure makes it difficult for many Dallas households to access high-speed Internet, so

the nonprofit designs connectivity solutions based on individuals’ needs.

“Maybe they're in an apartment complex where technically there's coverage on one side of the building but not on the other side of the building,” Steckly said. “If we're going to talk about equitable access to the Internet and digital resources, we need to make sure that everybody across the apartment complex has the same opportunity for coverage. We may go in and build technology using 4G LTE solutions, but we can also go into a community and build internal wire DSL solutions. We're not restricted to just using one form of technology, and we can really tailor it to the needs of those community members.”

Solving the digital divide allows households to be more connected to the local resources and support services they need to move out of poverty and strengthens the entire community’s economy, Steckly said.

“Now, we know that our services alone don't do that,” Steckly said. “It takes a village. But this provides better access to the village, so ultimately long term, we do believe that through programs like this, through investment in infrastructure (and) homegrown opportunities to create access to the wealth of content and knowledge that is otherwise beyond the reach of families that don't have these tools, we are creating brighter futures and brighter communities for the whole of Dallas overall.”

COVS Act Will Provide Refurbished Government Computers

President Signs Into Law Spanberger’s Bipartisan Legislation to Help Veterans Access More Job Opportunities, Provide Refurbished Government Computers to America’s Veterans, Students, & Seniors

The Congresswoman’s “Computers for Veterans and Students Act” Will Cut Red Tape to Provide More Federal Surplus Computers to Veterans, Students, & Seniors in Need

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Joe Biden last week signed into law U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger’s bipartisan bill to provide federal surplus and repairable computers to non-profit computer refurbishers — who will then repair and distribute these computers to veterans, students, and others in need.

In 1949, Congress created the Federal Surplus Personal Property Program through the Federal Property and Administrative Services Act. This program transfers nonessential federal property from the federal government to authorized State Agencies for Surplus Property, who then serve local units of government, businesses, nonprofits, and other eligible recipients. However, not all of this property — including computers and other technology equipment — is immediately usable, and the federal government does not currently have the authority to transfer this repairable equipment to third-party computer refurbishers. This restriction has resulted in waste and inefficiency.

To fix this issue, Spanberger’s Computers for Veterans and Students Act — signed into law as part of the end-of-year funding deal — will allow certified, nonprofit refurbishing companies to directly obtain, refurbish, and distribute surplus government computers to veterans and others in need of a device. Additionally, the new law requires each nonprofit computer refurbisher receiving computers to provide training programs in the use of this technology.

“Especially during the pandemic, Virginians saw more job applications, educational opportunities, and hiring processes move online. However, many low-income households, homeless veterans, and seniors don’t have reliable access to a laptop or desktop computer.

We need to close this device divide — because it’s an issue of opportunity,” said Spanberger. “After several years of pushing this legislation forward, I am proud to see it cross the finish line and be signed into law by the President. The Computers for Veterans and Students Act will cut red tape, reduce government waste, and provide surplus computers — which otherwise would be tossed in the trash or forgotten in a faraway storage unit — to veterans, seniors, and students who can put them to good use. I want to thank my colleagues Congressman Wittman and Congresswoman Luria for backing this legislation, and I look forward to watching the exciting progress ahead in the Virginia communities that stand to benefit.”

Spanberger’s legislation is backed by several nonprofit organizations that help veterans and students receive these refurbished computers — including Tech for Troops, a Virginia-based, veteran-staffed, and veteran-operated organization. Compudopt Women in Tech Event Delivered Exciting, Hands-on Tech Experience for Middle School Girls in Houston.

Compudopt hosted their annual Women in Tech Workshop for middle school girls at The Ion in Houston. 76 students and 40 volunteers participated in the event on Saturday, November 12, 2022 that provided a hands-on opportunity to explore technology, the world of virtual reality,

robotics, gaming, and more.

To start the day, participants enjoyed demo stations of virtual reality, take pictures in the photobooth, fly drones, and interact with various gaming systems. The morning was

highlighted by guest speaker, Sharon Caples McDougle. Sharon is a modern-day hidden figure who designed the NASA space suit and is known for suiting up the first African-American woman to go to space. She gave an inspiring speech on perseverance and finding

your passion despite the challenges that come your way.

The main event of the day was the group programming led by Compudopt trainers where students designed and built their own games. Students used Arduinos, Makey Makeys, breadboards, coding, and critical thinking to make a working project. Students then got an opportunity to speak with their mentors and ask questions about what it is like to be a woman in the STEM field.

The day concluded not only with raffle prizes for lucky winners, but every participant received a backpack stuffed with a free laptop to take home!

The impact of the event:

85% of students said they are interested in careers in the STEM field

98% of students said what they learned will help them in the future.

AT&T Announces $10M Contribution to Support Free Computer Distributions to Help Bridge the Digital Divide

As the company works towards goal of providing 1 million people in need with digital resources, new commitment will help close the gap by providing students and families with computers

What’s the news?

AT&T* will contribute more than $10M and the muscle of its employee volunteers to support the distribution of free laptops to students and families across the country. In total, Compudopt and Human-I-T will help provide 26,000 computers to those in need. Along with providing devices, the nonprofits will also offer digital inclusion programs and digital literacy resources.

These efforts are part of AT&T’s $2 billion commitment announced in 2021 to help address the digital divide by providing communities with the connectivity, computers, and digital skills needed for success in school and in life.

Last week, AT&T employees worked with Compudopt and Human-I-T to distribute more than 1,000 free laptops to students and families in need across the country, including in Dallas, Detroit, and Atlanta.

Why is this important?

According to the FCC, an estimated 21 million people across the U.S don’t have access to the internet, devices or skills needed to benefit from the online world, an issue known as the digital divide.

In a digital-first world, the lack of large screen devices puts many low-income families at a sizable disadvantage in their educational pursuits and in the job market. In the U.S., 41% of adults with lower incomes do not have a desktop or laptop computer.

Compudopt and Human-I-T refurbish and distribute computers to those in need. They also provide ongoing digital navigation support, tech support and digital literacy skill building for the whole family. AT&T is contributing:

$5.1M to Compudopt to support the distribution of 10,000 computers to vulnerable families nationwide
$5M to Human-I-T to enable the organization to distribute at least 16,000 fully subsidized computers to those in need through nonprofits across the country.
Human-I-T will also provide at least 1,000 virtual vouchers to low-income individuals for a discounted device. The vouchers are valued at $100, enabling individuals to buy a computer for as little as $20 out of pocket.

What else should I know?

AT&T’s contribution falls within its “Bridge to Possibility” campaign aimed at driving awareness of the challenges caused by the digital divide and the collective response needed to address it. Bridging the digital divide requires businesses, nonprofits and government to come together to bring high-quality connectivity to millions of people that need it most.

Players Coalition Awards $100,000 to Support Digital Inclusion in Austin with Support from Electronic Arts

(AUSTIN, TX ) – On May 4-5, Players Coalition , a nonprofit founded by former NFL players Anquan Boldin and Malcolm Jenkins, dedicated to making an impact on social justice and racial equality, and Compudopt , an organization aimed at providing technology to impacted students in the public school system, hosted a pop-up computer donation event for low income students and families in Austin.

The computer drive is part of a $100,000 Players Coalition grant awarded to Compudopt in partnership with Electronic Arts to directly impact more than 200 students and families most in need. Half of the grant provided 180 qualifying youth in Austin with free computers, while the other half provided an additional 50 elementary school students with a semester of technology education programming and a home computer. These students will be part of three different cohorts launching this June. In total, 230 students and families received the technology needed, along with two years of tech support and a two year computer warranty, to close the digital divide.

Compudopt delivers computer donation events across the country working with local schools and community groups serving students in need and provides both the devices and hands-on,
project-based learning.

free Technology Programs

HOUSTON, TX- (MARCH 24, 2022) – Compudopt, a non-proﬁt with a mission to provide technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their community, has partnered with Callon Petroleum Company to provide over 400 hours of free technology education to 180 students in the communities of Eagle Ford and Permian Basin, Texas. Technology-centered enrichment programs range from Early Adopters, serving elementary age children, to STEAM Team which cater to children in middle school. While programs center on building student’s confidence in approaching new technology and align to high demand careers, all participants who complete the program also receive a free laptop to take home and keep.

“Statistics show that the sooner students gain access to innovative technologies, the more prepared they will be to engage with the world around them and understand the role technology will play in their daily lives,” reports Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt. “We are incredibly grateful for the insight and generosity of Callon to support our expansion into the Eagle Ford and Permian Basin areas.”

The Compudopt Early Adopters Program is an in-depth exploration of today’s cutting-edge technologies for upper elementary students (grades 3-5). Students enrolled in this program learn how technology can be used to help enhance a story by designing their own virtual reality world and bring their creations to life through code built using Scratch and MakeCode. As an after-school enrichment program, Early Adopters provides students a structured, engaging environment to explore and learn.

The STEAM Team program engages middle-schoolers in an exploration of science, technology, engineering, art, and math skills that solve real world problems. Students completed projects using micro:bits, breadboards, ultrasonic sensors, and 3D printing, while learning coding, design, and more!

“These programs teach new skills to youth participants in under-resourced communities and incite a sense of curiosity around technology that feeds a student’s desire to learn more. We know this kind of experiential learning helps youth see new paths forward they may have never previously considered,” says Kim Pinyopusarerk, who oversees community engagement at Callon.

To date, Callon Petroleum has given over $220,000 in philanthropy and donated technology to support closing the digital divide in rural regional Texas communities.

Players Coalition Continues to Close the Digital Divide with over $1 Million in Education Grants to Directly Benefit Students

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 2, 2022 -- Players Coalition, the nonprofit founded by NFL players Anquan Boldin and Malcolm Jenkins , now with more than 1,500 athlete advocates across 12 professional leagues, announced this week that it has surpassed $1,120,300 in total local education grants. These investments address the digital divide and directly benefit students in underinvested schools and communities from 20 markets across the country.

Most recently in December of 2021, Players Coalition donated $430,000 in local education grants across eight markets nationwide to help provide K-12 students and schools with the needed internet access, broadband connectivity and technology devices to make learning remotely accessible. The grants were awarded to districts, schools and technology programs in Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, East Palo Alto, Jupiter, Nashville, Orlando and Prince George's County.

Players Coalition collaborates with expert organizations and resource partners including Chiefs for Change , Comp-U-Dopt and Electronic Arts to help identify and fund critical opportunities to ensure connectivity for students most in-need across the country.

"Students across the country should not have to worry about whether or not they can attend class or complete their homework because they lack access to computers at home," said Megan Steckly, Chief Executive Officer of Comp-U-Dopt. "It's time to put even more energy and resources than ever before into closing the digital divide. With the generous support from Players Coalition we can provide the computers needed for students to have a proper education."

"Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic disparities have been further exacerbated in low-income communities of color," said Players Coalition Task Force member and Arizona Cardinal offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum. "It is imperative that we continue to support these groups and advocate for digital inclusion throughout the nation."

Players Coalition continues to build momentum and engagement with representation across 12 professional leagues. Athletes from the NFL, Black Players For Change (MLS) and Black Women's Player Collective (NWSL) participated in the virtual grant announcements to students via video messages in each local market.

The pandemic has heightened education inequities and the digital divide in our country as millions still struggle to get online amidst the ongoing remote and hybrid learning environments. Students without access will continue to fall further behind in 2022 without additional support. According to studies done by McKinsey & Company , students are about four months behind in math and three in reading, compared with similar students in pre-pandemic years. The same studies show that the gap between students in majority-Black schools and students in majority-White schools is now three months wider than it was before the pandemic.

According to Pew Research Center , around a third of parents with children whose schools were closed during the pandemic (34%) said that their child encountered at least one technology-related obstacle to completing their schoolwork during that time.

Players Coalition hopes that these grants will help to bridge that gap. These local investments are part of a larger, ongoing commitment by Players Coalition aiming to achieve digital equity and inclusion for all students. In 2022, the PC Charitable Foundation will continue to engage new partners and invest additional grant funds in schools throughout the country addressing the digital divide and providing access to STEM education programming and technology in underinvested communities.

Compudopt joins AT&T and Digitunity to help provide free or low-cost computers, digital literacy training, and technical support to Dallas underserved residents over the next two years

DALLAS, Feb. 04, 2022 -- Compudopt has been selected as part of a 10-city project led by AT&T and Digitunity to provide more than 2,000 refurbished computers and technology support over the next two years to students and families in Dallas.

This project aims to help bridge the digital divide in Dallas by providing underserved residents with digital resources and skills training needed for online learning success. Many students across the U.S. are affected by the digital divide and struggle to participate in online learning opportunities because of unreliable internet access, lack of computers or poor digital literacy skills. This project will help students engage in today's digital learning environment.

Digitunity selected Compudopt to provide device refurbishment services, digital literacy training and technical support services in Dallas. In just the last 90 days, over 560 families in the Dallas metro area have benefited from receiving a donated computer from Compudopt through this project.

Initiative launches in Dallas, where Santander Consumer and Comp-U-Dopt will improve neighborhood Internet connectivity by providing thousands of households with free high-speed Internet, laptops and digital skills

DALLAS – Jan. 17, 2022 – Santander Consumer USA (“SC”) today announced that it is partnering with technology and community nonprofit Compudopt to help bridge the digital divide in several cities in the U.S. Funded by a $35 million multi-year grant from the Santander Consumer USA Inc. Foundation, SC and Compudopt will provide free high-speed Internet connectivity, computers, training and support to eligible low-income residents who enroll in a lottery for the program in select cities.

The program will begin with a $7 million investment in Dallas and expand over two years. The initiative is aimed at providing greater financial empowerment and overall well-being to communities who face challenges obtaining digital connectivity.

In Dallas, SC and Compudopt will target connectivity, laptops and digital skill-building resources to student households below 200 percent of the federal poverty level in the southern sector of the city, and deliver free:

Reliable high-speed Internet for up to 10,000 student households
Warrantied computers for student households (including bilingual help desk support)
Education and training to boost student and caregiver digital skills

Many Dallas households still confront gaps in high-speed Internet access due to factors such as insufficient infrastructure, lack of affordability, and end user knowledge and skill needs. According to a June 2021 Pew Research Institute study, more than 40 percent of households with lower incomes do not have reliable high-speed Internet or a personal computer. Accessing distance learning, telehealth, paying bills online, applying for jobs and reaching other support services requires that communities continue to invest in initiatives that close the digital divide sustainably.

“Today it is difficult, if not impossible, to find a job, complete schoolwork and connect with vital resources without a computer or reliable Internet,” said Santander Consumer USA CEO Mahesh Aditya. “Our program with Compudopt looks to level the playing field, providing families and students with critical computer and digital resources to help them prosper and thrive. The digital divide is a solvable problem, and it is critical that we continue to invest in initiatives that provide students and families the tools they need to access additional resources.”

PHILADELPHIA - (OCTOBER 19, 2021) – Comp-U-Dopt, a non-profit with a mission to provide technology access and education, has partnered with the Urban League, Dynegy and its parent company, Vistra, and the City of Philadelphia’s PHLDonateTech initiative, to collect and provide 1,000 free reconditioned computers for distribution to underserved communities in Philadelphia. This is Comp-U-Dopt’s first project in Pennsylvania. The program is up and running in 11 other states and the District of Columbia.

While schools and governments continue to scramble to close the digital divide, there are still tens-of-thousands of households in our Philadelphia communities without access to a computer at home.

According to the Pew Research Institute, 41% of low-income families lack access to a computer at home and census data points to approximately 13 million families across the United States facing the same challenge. While many school districts have addressed distance learning with loaned devices, the content restrictions and temporary nature of the solution means the real digital divide remains unsolved.

Families in need of a device can visit Comp-U-Dopt’s website ( www.compudopt.org/philadelphia ) and complete a short form to enter them into the computer lottery. The organization then randomly selects families on the lists based on their available inventory then invites them to attend a drive-thru distribution.

On the day of distribution , families bring their unique QR registration code and are then handed their computer. Social distancing and safety protocols are maintained, and the device is placed in the family’s vehicle. Computers are given to families free of charge. Comp-U-Dopt also provides information on free and low-cost internet options that match a family’s specific needs.

DAYTON, OH (Aug. 16, 2021) – Comp-U-Dopt, a nonprofit with a mission to provide technology access and education has allocated 400 free computers this year for underserved youth through a donation from CenterPoint Energy.

While the world continues to transition its day-to-day operations to online modalities, with education, business and health sectors pivoting to virtual learning, zoom meetings and telehealth, the demand for computers and adequate internet access continues to accelerate.

“This is a solvable problem, and it is critical that we continue to invest in initiatives that support giving students and families the tools they need to access additional resources,” says Megan Steckly, CEO for Comp-U-Dopt . “Donations like this demonstrate how solvable this issue really is for the community.”

According to a June 2021 Pew Research Institute, 41% of low-income families still lack access to a computer at home despite major efforts to close the device gap across the nation in 2020. With uncertainty around the Delta-variant, the need to ensure families have their own devices has never been more critical. Accessing distance learning, telehealth, paying bills online, and reaching other support services requires that communities continue to invest in initiatives that close the digital divide sustainably. Comp-U-Dopt’s approach ensures families have devices, technical support, and digital literacy at their fingertips.

While 400 families will be served at this distribution, Comp-U-Dopt has distributed over 20,000 computers across their sites nationally to students without access to a device at home over the past twelve months. Most of these are distributed through their computer lottery which parents can register for on their website www.compudopt.org/dayton.

Comp-U-Dopt pulls lottery registrants randomly in advance of a distribution based on the inventory they have available. Selected families then rsvp for a date and time to pick up their computer at one of their distribution sites. Social distancing and safety protocols are maintained, and the device is placed in the family’s vehicle. Funded by CenterPoint Energy, the computers are given to families free of charge, include two years of free tech support, and Comp-U-Dopt also provides information on free and low-cost internet options that match family’s specific needs.

83% of computer recipients are living in households earning less than $50,000 annually with an average family size greater than 4 people.

CHICAGO, Illinois (Aug. 25, 2021) Comp-U-Dopt, a nonprofit that provides technology access and education to underserved youth, announced it has been named one of five beneficiaries to receive funding from Invest For Kids. Comp-U-Dopt will be featured at the Invest For Kids 13th Annual Conference, November 4, 2021.

Comp-U-Dopt opened its Chicago Regional office in April of 2020 and since has secured more than 11,000 computers and delivered over 8,800 reconditioned computers to Chicago area families who did not previously own one. Alongside technology access, Comp-U-Dopt programs create a pathway for youth to develop technology skills from technology basics to specialization starting at age 9 through age 26. The Early Adopters program reaches upper elementary students and incites their curiosity in technology. STEAM Team , a program geared towards middle school students, builds necessary critical thinking skills, and builds confidence in the world of technology. The Learn2Earn program encourages high school students to explore computer hardware and software engineering, understand how tech skills can be applied to the workforce, and develop a portfolio of high-demand skills. DALLAS (Aug. 16, 2021) – Comp-U-Dopt, a nonprofit that provides technology access and education to underserved youth, announced its latest addition to its board. Aligned Automation CEO Nitin Ahuja joined Comp-U-Dopt’s board in July, bringing the members to 16 distinguished leaders from the business and technology sectors to help extend and sustain the Comp-U-Dopt reach nationally. Comp-U-Dopt’s programs serve to eliminate limited access to computers, facilitate growth in technical and digital literacy skills and support the future of youth in our communities. Since 2007, they have served more than 43,000 children and young adults and diverted 450+ tons of computer hardware from landfills.

More than 30% of children from low-income families in America face inequitable access to technology, an issue commonly referred to as the digital divide. The effects are far-reaching, inhibiting the ability to do homework, make social connections and prepare effectively for college or the job market. Comp-U-Dopt has focused on closing the divide since 2007, driven by the belief that every child deserves equal access to education and opportunity. With an increased focus on remote learning, the pandemic served as a reminder for how important technology access is for children to succeed.

“We’ve been addressing digital equity for more than 14 years,” said Megan Steckly, Comp-U-Dopt CEO. “As we gear up for another school year, we remember the unknown waters many school administrators and families navigated while adjusting rapidly to the virtual learning set in motion by COVID-19. While it was challenging for all families, those without reliable access to private computers and WIFI were among those hit hardest. We believe no child’s learning should be limited by technology access, no matter what the circumstances are.”

As Comp-U-Dopt grows, Steckly said they are also expanding their board of dedicated and committed leaders. In July they officially announced the addition of Dallas-based entrepreneur, Nitin Ahuja, who co-founded and leads Aligned Automation as CEO.

HOUSTON, Jun. 17 /BusinessWire/ -- Hess Corporation (NYSE: HES ) today announced a $9 million financial commitment over the next three years as part of its Learning for Life Partnership to fund educational programs and support services for children in three economically disadvantaged communities in Houston that are part of Mayor Sylvester Turner's Complete Communities Initiative. Hess employees will also volunteer time and expertise to support these programs.

The Hess Learning for Life Partnership will benefit approximately 22 schools and more than 13,000 children from pre-K through elementary, middle, and high school in Houston's Third Ward, Magnolia Park-Manchester, and Second Ward Complete Communities neighborhoods. The partnership expands the scope and reach of Hess' LEAP (Learn, Engage, Advance, Persevere) educational program, a $7.4 million investment over the last eight years to support students in the Magnolia Park and Second Ward neighborhoods.

Hess Learning for Life grants are being made through the Greater Houston Community Foundation to various nonprofit organizations to address needs identified by Mayor Turner's Complete Communities initiative, helping ensure that all Houstonians have equal access to quality services and amenities.

It also will provide full scholarships for nine high school seniors each year to pursue a college degree or vocational certification and support work-study programs at the University of Houston and Texas Southern University in the Third Ward.

Non-profit focuses on a national expansion after distributing thousands of laptops to families without home computer access

HOUSTON — Dec. 9. 2020 — Comp-U-Dopt, a non-profit driven by the belief that every child deserves equal access to education and opportunity, is announcing changes to its board of directors and a strategic vision for the next five years. Effective immediately, Varun Babbili, Curtis A. Morgan, and Laurie Tuzo will join the Comp-U-Dopt national board of directors.

“Comp-U-Dopt is very excited to be adding new members to our board of directors as we expand nationally. Each member brings a wealth of experience in strategy and growth, as well as a passionate commitment to contribute meaningfully to work that improves our communities,” said Comp-U-Dopt CEO Megan Steckly.

Laurie Tuzo has spent over 30 years as a global corporate banker, most recently as a managing director and senior relationship executive with JP Morgan in Houston. A career relationship banker with functional expertise in corporate finance, Ms. Tuzo has worked with senior executives across diverse industry sectors and geographies to develop and implement global financing solutions in support of strategic initiatives. Ms. Tuzo has also led business transformation and growth in leadership roles for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (“CBA”), as the senior executive for the North American business, based in New York and, also in New York, as co-head of diversified industrials for ABN AMRO’s Wholesale bank in North America. City of Houston Launches Computer Access Program in Partnership with Comp-U-Dopt

City of Houston Launches Computer Access Program in Partnership with Comp-U-Dopt

November 16, 2020 -- Houston City Council recently approved an $800,000 program to provide computers to low-income Houstonians. Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Health Equity Response (H.E.R.) Task Force has partnered with Comp-U-Dopt, a non-profit that provides technology access and education to underserved youth, to distribute up to 1,900 computers for free to qualifying applicants from now until December 30, 2020.

“The pandemic has highlighted the importance of digital access particularly in our vulnerable communities.” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “This program will help provide families with the electronic and digital means to get critical information, access telehealth programs and online services, and participate in remote working and learning opportunities.”

To qualify for the Computer Access Program, applicants must reside in the City of Houston and meet two additional sets of criteria. First, they must demonstrate that their total household income prior to February 2020 was lower than 80 percent of the Area Median Income. Second, they must be a member of one of the following groups: persons over age 65, persons with disabilities, households with children less than five years of age, or opportunity youth, defined as persons ages 16-24 who are not currently enrolled in school or participating in the workforce.

“We are proud to partner with the City of Houston to provide digital access to our most-vulnerable neighbors,” said Colin Dempsey, Comp-U-Dopt Executive Director of the Houston & Galveston areas. “These refurbished computers will be a lifeline for families who are still navigating a new world during the pandemic.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the gap between those with digital access and those without. For people without digital access that have remained homebound or are limiting their interactions in public places, they risk becoming isolated from others and from crucial opportunities, like job applications or assistance programs. While there are similar technology access programs for families with school-age children, the H.E.R. Task Force technology access subcommittee identified that there were critical groups that were being overlooked.

“This is more than just a computer for these individuals and families. This is a pathway to opportunity.” said Jesse Bounds, Chief Innovation Officer and a leader of the Mayor’s H.E.R. Task Force. “We are providing the tools for these families to unlock their potential and do so safely from the comfort of their homes during the pandemic.”

The computers will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Because these groups may not have access to digital ads or articles, the H.E.R. Task Force is encouraging Houstonians to refer the program to loved ones or friends who might need assistance.

Comp-U-Dopt Celebrates the Launch of the TC Energy Tech Hub in the Near Northside

On Saturday, Nov. 7 , Comp-U-Dopt , along with TC Energy , the TC Energy Foundation and other philanthropic partners, celebrated the re-opening of the Comp-U-Dopt facility and launch of the TC Energy Tech Hub (Tech Hub) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a community computer distribution.

Comp-U-Dopt, a nonprofit providing technology access and education to underserved youth, has provided over 17,000 computers to families without access to a device during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, building on its recent service to the community and its 13-year history of closing the digital divide, Comp-U-Dopt is opening the Tech Hub thanks to a US$200,000 donation from the TC Energy Foundation. This space will allow Comp-U-Dopt to deliver high-quality, hands-on, technology education programming to hundreds of students in the Houston area.

Technology education is a critical third pillar defining the digital divide and must be included in any long-term solution to closing the gap. “We know that by providing not only the tool but the training students need, we are enabling them to see a new path forward and help to create the next generation of innovators,” says Megan Steckly, Comp-U-Dopt CEO. “The support from TC Energy and other philanthropic partners in this project directly ensures more youth have access to programs that align to high-demand careers and a bright future for our communities.”

Approximately 90% of jobs require digital skills, and more than 40% of current workers cite having a significant technical skills gap, yet fewer than half of U.S. high schools teach computer science. For students from economically disadvantaged families, the technology skill gap is wider because of a lack of regular access to quality programming. When students are given access and exposure to technology and technology education, the tools for discovery become their own and learning can extend beyond the classroom.

HOUSTON —

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, learning from home has become the new norm for tens of thousands of Houston students. The technology gap between disadvantaged students is growing, limiting their ability to learn.

An estimated 50,000 students in the Houston area lack the basic tools they need to do their schoolwork from home.

KHOU is working to close the digital divide by getting "like-new" computers into the hands of students across Harris County. KHOU has partnered with Comp-U-Dopt, a Texas-based non-profit that works directly with families to distribute devices within our community. Funds raised will go to supporting Comp-U-Dopt’s efforts to close the digital divide here in Houston.

For every $2,000 we raise, we can donate 10 computers to kids. We have set a goal of $50,000 for our virtual telethon on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Comp-U-Dopt Partners with HISD to Kick Off Virtual School Year

The Houston Independent School District’s Camp Spark academic online enrichment program, designed to reignite student engagement and equip them with tools and information to maximize their return to classes, begins Monday, August 24 and runs through Friday, September 4. Comp-U-Dopt will be providing lessons on digital awareness to all

students in preK through 5th grade each day at 9:30 AM.

“We are excited to engage students in technology education that will get them ready to participate in the virtual start of the 2020/21 school year. “ Executive Director of Comp-U-Dopt Houston, Colin Dempsey said. “We know that technology skills will be fundamental for the success of students in HISD and this is a key part of our mission here at Comp-U-Dopt.”

All students, preK through 12 are encouraged to attend Camp Spark so they can return strong for the 2020-2021 school year, which begins with virtual instruction on Tuesday, September 8. Campers will attend from 9 a.m. – noon. Click here for the primary schedule and here for the secondary schedule.

Educational content for camp participants will be provided by the Houston Zoo, Microsoft, Smart Financial, Houston Public Library, Children’s Museum of Houston, Houston Ballet, Verizon Innovative Coaches, Houston Dynamo and Dash, Comp-U-Dopt, Challenger Seven Learning Center- Harris County Precinct One, and others, as well as HISD staff and teachers.

“I am excited about Camp Spark’s unique lessons that will be presented to our students with the support of our amazing business and community partners,” Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan said. “Our students will receive wonderful instruction that we believe will inspire them to have a successful school year despite the obstacles we face.”

Camp Spark lessons will include physical fitness, science, literacy, math, internet safety, technology and art. Rising ninth-graders will take part in a boot camp to prepare them for high school while 10th- through 12th-graders will participate in a College and Career Readiness course. Other student camp activities will include virtual field trips and, for secondary students, instruction on navigating HISD’s HUB online platform, Microsoft and Google plus, SAT prep, and how to complete college admissions, financial aid and scholarship applications.

Students with excellent attendance will have the chance to win hundreds of prizes like STEM kits from the Children’s Museum, and grand prizes of Bluetooth Bumpboxxes. Camp Spark is free for all students. Through closed captioning, 50 languages will be available. No login is needed for daily participation. Initial registration is encouraged but not required at Houstonisd.org/CampSpark.
